Buying an old house is always a risk, and so far we've focused mainly on the good aspects of the house - what made me fall in love with it, and why I decided to buy it. But as I was filming these house renovations adventures, in my 120 year old fixer upper, I had this nagging feeling that I was missing something. Like there was something I was forgetting to properly communicate, and it wasn't u...

What we did for the rainwater in the basement problem was apply cement at the base of the fieldstone foundation at an angle angle the diverts the water away from the house. It worked like a charm!

I helped a friend based overseas by cleaning her elderly parents house after they had moved, so they could sell it. It was a ton of work and trips to the dump - a big house that hadn’t been maintained for years because of health/mobility issues but I was allowed to take anything left in the house. I scored a lemon tree, some vintage trophies, a box brownie camera (not functional except as a decor piece), an electric lawn mower and a set of beautiful wooden shelves that were in the garage storing paint but now live in my craft space and display fabric. Just like to say, I started following for the historical costuming content. The house project is a super interesting channel development, but then the patio makeover got me thinking about what I could do to my (rented) place. And the trunk video was actually genius and made me want to play with my dremel…I like to watch creative humans doing creative things, but you don’t *owe* me content. Sheesh 🙄

I got about 15 beautifully organized tackle boxes of beads from a yard sale once for $25. Propbably $1000+ of beads if you bought them new. Evidently it was their mothers collection that they inherited and they just wanted them gone. Its been such a boon for projects.

Boring but necessary huge score: an extension ladder that goes up to 6.5 meters. Very necessary for doing work on my 2 story house and the (taller than the house) phoenix palm tree on the front yard. It was from a phone cable maintenance subcontractor who was downscalling his business so it was a professional quality one that was about 3 grand new - bought it on Marketplace for 300 bucks. Unnecessary but amazing huge score: a 1732 English history book. It was in an online $1 reserve auction and was just listed as 'vintage book'. A quick Google revealed it was over 230 years old. It was just me and one other bidder fighting it out with $1 bids - I ended up getting it for $56. It's gorgeous, gilded and embossed leather cover, raised bands on the spine, marbled endpapers. Back when it was made it would have been a major status symbol to own. I collect antique books and it's the oldest and largest in my collection.

My parents just remodeled their kitchen and laundry room. They had a cabinet that they took out of the laundry room that they were just going to throw away. So I took it home, and it fits perfectly in my bathroom to store towels and toilet paper. It was exactly what I needed, and it was free.

I really enjoy whatever you put up as this is your channel and what you put up is what you want to share. I'm sorry that people are hounding you. Best deals I ever got was when my children were very small, I had no money spare and I wanted to make my nieces rag dolls for Christmas gifts that year. My neighbour over my back fence gave me a box of offcuts from her dressmaking days. I also mentioned my project to the kindergarten my two youngest attended and they gave me an entire rubbish bag filled with fabric on the understanding that I'd make them a rag doll too - and it's as easy to make four dolls as three. So I made the dolls, my nieces loved them (so did the kindergarten) and asides from the body fabric I spent no money at all on it.

My next door neighbour at the time gave us their lounge suite as her husband kept making the fabric dirty when he sat down and they got a leather suite instead. It was only a few years old with 2 recliners and a 3 seater lounge. I gave it a good clean and we used it till it fell apart.

Love this video. Sorry youve been getting some hostile comments lately. I adore all of your content Shannon. My biggest score was when I got a brand new bed for free from some random people when i was helping a friend move stuff in their storage locker. These folks were moving out and said this bed had been used twice and then sat in storage about a year. It totally felt like a right place right time moment because i was in the market for a bed anyway and i still sleep on it soundly every night.

A few weeks back I hit up the thrift store and ended up finding a really cute peasant style dress for 6$. It's a bit short on me (I mean, I'm 5'10, so...) but it perfectly matches a cotton skirt I already own, so I can either layer or crop it short and keep it as a blouse, and now I have a super cute Renfaire outfit if I'm able to handle the heat this autumn!

Yay for free hardwood! I also would have grabbed it, whether I needed it or not. I tend to hoard good scrap wood and last year had so much that I made an outdoor planting/work table out of what I had collected (including the screws) - so there was no monetary outlay whatsoever! It's very strong and functional and I love it. I am a marketplace devotee here where I live (South Carolina) and have a number of really good "scores." I bought an old Singer 66 treadle (thistle design) last year and while the fair price I paid wasn't a huge bargain, what made it a score in my book is that the man delivered it into my house. Those things are freakishly heavy! It's in fabulous condition; it was always kept indoors and never lived outside or in a barn. It works well but needs some love (the bobbin case cover was missing, as with many of those machines, which I have already replaced - and it needs a little bit of cleaning, oiling, and a new belt). Once I get all that done, I'm excited to learn to use it, as I understand there is a learning curve to getting used to the speed and rhythm of the treadle. I suppose the best score I ever got was not on marketplace, though. I am on friendly terms with my ex, so when he sold his house last year to downsize, he called me to ask if I wanted anything. So I went and picked through my "previous" belongings that I didn't take when we divorced (kind of a weird experience) and while there, he practically begged me to take (for free, of course) the four Ethan Allen bookcase/cabinet units we had purchased 35 years ago. I did not hesitate for an instant! They are beautiful, exceedingly well-made, and after googling their value I found that they are very desirable and bring a good price on the secondary market (not that I'll ever sell them). I always loved them but didn't have a place for them when I moved out 20-some-odd years ago. I am so excited and happy to have them back! Often, when I walk past our study where they live now, I run my hand down the side of one and reaffirm to myself that I will never let them go again. Thanks for all the work you do that goes into your videos! I love them all (especially when there's corgi content)!
